In his June 22, 2023 sanctions order in Mata v. Avianca, U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel concluded that “a penalty of $5,000 paid into the Registry of the Court is sufficient but not more than necessary,” imposed jointly and severally on the two lawyers and their firm for submitting non-existent judicial opinions created by ChatGPT.
