HAL 9000, the shipboard computer that controls the spacecraft Discovery and ultimately kills most of its crew, was introduced in Arthur C. Clarke’s novel “2001: A Space Odyssey,” published in 1968 and developed concurrently with Stanley Kubrick’s film of the same name.
