DARPA’s 1983 “Strategic Computing: New-Generation Computing Technology” plan set out to build “a new generation of machine intelligence technology” for defense, organized around an autonomous land vehicle, a pilot’s associate, and a battle management system. The program ran roughly from 1983 to 1993 and spent on the order of a billion dollars, funding advances in parallel hardware and vision without delivering its flagship AI demonstrations.
