In July 1966 Seymour Papert authored an MIT AI Group memo, “The Summer Vision Project,” describing “an attempt to use our summer workers effectively in the construction of a significant part of a visual system.” The problem of making computers reliably see was not substantially solved until the deep-learning advances of the 2000s and 2010s - roughly half a century later.
