IBM’s own history of the event records that in the February 2011 Jeopardy! match its Watson system finished with $77,147, ahead of Ken Jennings’s $24,000 and Brad Rutter’s $21,600. Watson’s winnings were donated to charity. The match demonstrated a computer answering open-ended natural-language questions in real time without any internet connection.
