On June 30, 2026, Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion investment in a new Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization, making it the first major cloud hyperscaler to formalize the embedded-engineering model for enterprise AI adoption. The announcement was published by Francessca Vasquez, Vice President of Frontier AI Engineering and Services at AWS.
Under the model, AWS engineers embed directly within customer organizations to co-develop and deploy agentic AI solutions, compressing deployment timelines that the company says previously took months down to days or weeks. AWS positions the approach against traditional consulting: engagements are structured around business results rather than billable hours, and customers are meant to leave with working systems plus lasting internal skills, workflows, and patterns.
AWS said FDE teams were already embedded with the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, the NFL, Ricoh, and Southwest Airlines. The NFL’s CIO cited fan-facing products such as NFL Fantasy AI and NFL IQ deployed in a matter of weeks.
The move adopts a model associated with Palantir and more recently with OpenAI and Anthropic, and signals that the constraint on enterprise AI has shifted from model capability to deployment capacity. Microsoft answered two days later with a $2.5 billion subsidiary of its own.
