On October 7, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers, expanding to the Free and Go tiers the following day. Paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol and free tiers on GPT-6 Luna, both tuned for everyday conversation. OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 1.2 billion weekly users. The change applies to the Chat experience; the models behind Work and Codex were not changed.
The headline feature is Intelligent UI. OpenAI trained GPT-6 to compose responses from text, visuals and interactive elements, including charts, tappable buttons, forms and small tools such as a bill splitter or a savings calculator, chosen per question. It built a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that renders the interface progressively as the model generates it, and says it trained the model to judge when a plain text answer is the better choice.
GPT-6 in ChatGPT can also begin answering while it continues to think, interleaving reasoning with partial answers. OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44 percent sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions needing web search.
Why it matters: this is the first time a mainstream assistant at this scale moved its default answer format from a chat transcript to a generated interface. OpenAI frames it as software adapting to people instead of people learning software.
What it does not show: the speed and quality comparisons are internal OpenAI evaluations, and the post itself says the model’s design judgment still needs work; how often users prefer generated interfaces over text is not reported.
