On July 6, 2026, SAP announced it had completed its acquisition of Dremio, an open, high-performance data lakehouse platform. The deal, originally agreed in May 2026, folds Dremio’s technology into SAP Business Data Cloud, which now operates as an Apache Iceberg-native environment. Financial terms were not disclosed in the completion announcement.
The strategic logic is squarely about AI agents. SAP says the combination lets customers run analytical and AI workloads across SAP and non-SAP data in real time with no data movement or format conversion, at what it calls vastly improved economics for enterprise analytics. SAP CTO Philipp Herzig summarized the thesis: enterprise AI does not stall because models are not good enough, it stalls because the data is not ready for AI agents, and Dremio removes that bottleneck.
The completion is part of a broader pattern of enterprise software incumbents buying the data layer underneath agentic AI rather than the agents themselves. For SAP, whose installed base holds much of the world’s ERP and financial data, an open lakehouse foundation is the prerequisite for selling AI agents that can act across a customer’s entire data estate, not just SAP’s own systems.
