On June 25, 2026, UpDoc announced FDA clearance for what it describes as the first Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) that uses patient-facing large language models. The platform lets clinicians deploy AI agents that autonomously handle clinical tasks that historically required physician involvement, such as medication adjustments, lab ordering, and care coordination, operating between scheduled visits and integrating with electronic health records.
The company says the system is designed to support doctors rather than replace them, pairing automated agentic AI with clinician oversight to manage chronic disease at scale. Initial deployments named in the announcement include Cleveland Clinic, Allegheny Health Network, UCSF Health, and one additional health system.
The clearance is paired with 18 million dollars in seed funding from investors including Mayo Clinic, Eli Lilly, and Pear VC. CEO Sharif Vakili, MD, called the clearance a historic milestone for the field and the beginning of a new era in clinical care.
