Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5

On July 24, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, priced at 5 dollars per million input tokens and 25 dollars per million output tokens. That is the same list price as its predecessor Opus 4.8, so the release is not a price cut to Anthropic’s own frontier tier. The company instead frames the model as delivering the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5, which it positions at double the price, at half the cost per task. A fast mode runs at around 2.5 times the default speed for twice the base price.

Anthropic published several benchmark claims with the release. On Frontier-Bench v0.1 the company says Opus 5 surpasses all other models and more than doubles the score of its predecessor Opus 4.8. On CursorBench 3.2 it lands within 0.5 percent of Fable 5’s peak score at half the cost. On ARC-AGI 3, Anthropic reports Opus 5 scoring three times as high as the next-best model, and on the OSWorld 2.0 computer-use benchmark it says Opus 5 surpasses Fable 5’s best result at just over a third of the cost.

The model shipped everywhere on day one: the Claude API under the model id claude-opus-5, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Anthropic made it the new default model on Claude Max and the strongest model available on Claude Pro.

For businesses the notable line is cost per finished task rather than any single benchmark or the list price, which did not move. Anthropic’s argument is that Opus 5 reaches a given result using fewer tokens and fewer attempts than the more expensive Fable 5, so the bill per completed job falls even though the per-token rate is unchanged. That distinction matters most for agentic workloads, where token volume is high and the relevant budget line is cost per task rather than cost per million tokens.
