Tractable

Tractable is an AI company that applies computer vision to insurance claims, analysing photographs of damaged vehicles and property to estimate repair costs and triage claims. Where a traditional auto claim might wait days for a human appraiser, Tractable’s models read the images and produce an assessment quickly, which insurers use to settle simpler claims faster and route complex ones to people.

On its insurer-facing site, Tractable describes products that capture first- notice-of-loss photos to instantly classify a claim as total loss, repairable, or cash settlement, and that pre-fill repair cost estimates with what it calls pixel- level precision. The company cites operational results from its deployments, including claim-cycle-time reductions of about eight days with photo-based triage, a 50 percent reduction in estimate-writing time, and around 70 percent of claims reviewed without human involvement in its claim-review product.

For a general reader, Tractable is a clear example of computer vision moving into a high-volume back-office process. The interesting tension - which it shares with other claims-automation efforts - is balancing speed and cost savings against accuracy and fairness when an algorithm, not a person, decides what your damage is worth.
