Grant Sanderson is a math educator and the creator of 3Blue1Brown, a YouTube channel he describes on his about page as “primarily a YouTube channel focused on explaining math visually.” His stated goal is “to make more people love math, whether for its utility or its beauty, following a philosophy that any such love begins with deep understanding.”
His about page explains that the videos, “together with Manim, the animation engine behind them, began as side projects” while he was finishing his study of math and computer science at Stanford. After a period at Khan Academy, he has worked on 3Blue1Brown full time since 2016. The channel’s name comes from his sectoral heterochromia, which makes one eye appear, in his words, “3/4 blue and 1/4 brown.”
For readers of this library, Sanderson matters because his deep learning series, beginning with “But what is a neural network?”, is one of the most widely used visual introductions to how neural networks actually work. He is the original author and animator of that explanation, not a summarizer of someone else’s material.
