Mustafa Suleyman is a co-founder of DeepMind and of Inflection AI, and since 2024 the CEO of Microsoft AI. He sits at the intersection of several pivotal AI organizations.
His appointment was announced on March 19, 2024, in a message from Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella wrote that Suleyman joins as “EVP and CEO, Microsoft AI,” joining the senior leadership team and reporting directly to him. Nadella said he had “greatly admired him as a founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions.”
The same announcement folded Microsoft’s consumer AI surfaces under Suleyman: the teams behind Copilot, Bing, and Edge, along with Microsoft’s generative AI group, moved to report to him. Several Inflection employees, whom Nadella described as “some of the most accomplished AI engineers, researchers, and builders in the world,” joined Microsoft alongside him.
For business readers, Suleyman’s path illustrates how AI talent and intellectual property have concentrated inside the largest technology companies: from co-founding the lab behind AlphaGo, to building a consumer chatbot startup, to running consumer AI at Microsoft.
